Pop 3 email (Post Office Protocol 3) is the system where your email is stored on our banks of servers. You would then log in using software such as Microsoft Outlook / MIcrosoft Express / Microsoft Entourage or via webmail (browser based email access and management). Your email is stored with us until you download it via your chosen client. Once your software has downloaded your email it then instructs the server to delete the email from the server.
IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is where, again, your email is stored on our banks of servers and you use an email client to obtain your mail. The difference between IMAP and Pop3 email is that IMAP still stores a copy up on the server. When you delete an email in your email client, it deletes it from the server. Your computer and the server will constantly be synchronizing with the server whilst you have a connection.
